Al Zaher was built at the beginning of the twentieth century, by a Lebanese family. It offers a beautiful sight with its red - painted building surrounded by a beautiful garden, in Zarif area.
It was rented first to a Japanese delegation, then it became the residence of the British ambassador to Lebanon.

In 1984, during the Lebanese war, the Social Welfare Institutions bought it and called it " Al Zaher " hoping for a better future.

This step was taken by SWI since the islamic orphanage was first established in the same area in 1917, and since the handicapped children lodging in Aramoun complex were displaced after the bombing of the complex by the Israeli aviation in 1982.

Years after that, the complex was rebuilt and the handicapped children returned there. Al Zaher became the general headquarter of SWI for philantropy, social care, development and partnership. The committee of the Ladies auxiliary occupies the outhouse in " Ashghalouna ".

During years, Al Zaher was taken care for, as a valuable heritage due to its authentic Lebanese architectural design.

It was later on furnished with adequate artistic oriental pieces in addition to facilities for the use of computer and other new technologies.
